The winter months can take their toll on your skin. As the weather turns colder and windier your skin may need some help and extra protection from the environment if it’s going to come out the other side looking healthy and radiant.

The winter weather can cause many problems to your skin including dryness which can result in flaking, cracking and even eczema.

Follow these 5 Tips to winter skin protection

winter skin

1. The moisturizer that you are currently using in the summer is fine for your skin but as the weather changes and the colder weather moves in your skin will need extra protection to keep it will well moisturized and prevent it from drying out. Don’t use a heavy cream as this can clog up your pores causing an acne breakout. Try using a serum under your moisturizer, this will help lock in the moisture to your skin and prevent it from drying out. Just because the sun isn’t out that doesn’t mean that you should stop using sunscreen protection, your daily moisturizer should always contain a good sunscreen protection.

2. Don’t forget about your lips just because it’s cold outside, they should be part of your winter skin protection regime. The main reason why your lips become chapped is because, unlike the rest of your skin, there are no oil glands in your lips. Use a lip balm that contains sunscreen protection and provides a barrier against the elements. Shea butter can be absorbed by the lips and has both moisturizing and healing properties it also contains a natural UV protection.

3. Although a hot shower may seem a good idea on a freezing cold morning, try to avoid them as much as possible. Exposing your body to a high water temperature can cause blood vessel dilation, when this happens it can result in water loss in the Dermis of your skin. Causing dryness of your skin. Keep the time spent in the shower to a minimum and avoid harsh soaps and shower gels which again will cause dryness in your skin.

4. Your hands need to be taken care of just as much as the rest of your body. The skin on your hands tends to be thinner than the skin on other parts of your body and has fewer oil glands, which can mean that it may be more difficult to keep them well moisturized in the winter weather. Washing your hands frequently to avoid any nasty cold and flu germs can make the situation worse. Use a hand cream that contains glycerine throughout the day which will help take care of problem hands.

5. Use a humidifier in your house to help prevent your skin from drying out. When it’s cold outside you tend to have your heating on more, so to restore the moisture in your house treat yourself to a humidifier, your skin will thank you for it.
