Is Your Face Mask More Damaging Than Relaxing?

Do you like to relax in the evenings with a mask on your face?   Masks can be extremely beneficial to your skin and provide it with the nutrients it needs.   I will be doing a post in the near future on some masks you can make using what you find in your fridge for you to try – watch for it!   But if you are using a peel off mask – read on to see why this may not be a good idea for your skin.

Peel off masks are marketed to say that when you peel it off of your skin you should be bringing the blackheads and impurities with it.  Not so true.   Blackheads and impurities can be drawn out of your skin by regular cleaning and exfoliation.  If your skin is at all sensitive – which most people find their skin is – peeling something off of your skin can damage it and irritate it further.  You are pulling away at least a few layers of your skin, and while it is important to remove the top layers of your skin regularly to encourage cell turnover and reveal healthier newer skin – gentle exfoliation is a way better option for this.  Sometimes with the peel-offs it removes too much skin – including the protective layer – and can make you more susceptible to sun damage.  And if you use a peel off mask on acne it can pull at the acne and inflame it further – or spread the acne bacteria around the skin.  Plus the ingredients used to make the peel off function can also be quite drying to the skin.  And last but certainly not least, by peeling off the mask you also remove all of the little hairs on your face – which will probably hurt quite a bit!

A better option for exfoliating your skin, and getting rid of blackheads, is a gentle exfoliant such as the ZENMED AHA/BHA Complex.  If you have normal skin with no issues your cleanser and a soft washcloth should do the trick.   If you are looking for more of a comforting mask treatment – try the ZENMED Anti-Redness Mask.  It’s a great, moisturizing treat that helps to rid the skin of redness and give it a nice soothing treat.  And be sure to check back for my healthy skin mask recipes soon!
