Latest trends in anti-aging skincare

Anti-aging skincare application is starting earlier and earlier, according to industry experts. In fact, with the distinct rise in the number of people in their 20s and 30s looking for nonsurgical age prevention, one could say that it’s never too early to go on the offense.

According to beauty industry analyst Larissa Jensen, a director with market research company The NPD Group, “Thirty-nine percent of the Gen Y demographic [age 25-34] considers anti-aging benefits to be important, a significant leap from the 19 percent of 18–24 year olds who agree.”

Skincare companies are doing their best to keep up with the demand, offering alternatives to invasive surgical procedures with products containing hyaluronic acid, collagen and peptides.  In fact, the hydrating boost provided by hyaluronic acid may put a halt to the appearance of fine lines and other visible signs of aging. Omega 3 fatty acids are also hot when it comes to anti-aging ingredients. These, especially when used in conjunction with hyaluronic acid, help plump the skin. This results in less skin sagging.

One of the biggest trends in the skincare industry now, though, is microneedling — the controlled puncturing of the skin to stimulate healthy growth processes. This practice, which prompts fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin, is commonly used for reduction of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring and stretch marks.

The most important  thing to keep in mind when it comes to anti-aging is that skincare isn’t limited to what you put on it or in it. It’s everything around it as well.

Called extrinsic aging — the effects of which are now being talked about– it’s the accumulation of sun damage, food selection, stress, sleep, health and lifestyle choices on our skin. Genetics also play a role, but the factors in extrinsic aging are within our control.

Whether this means getting more sleep, keeping stress in check or overhauling your current diet, speaking to a skincare professional about how to limit extrinsic aging is one of the most natural and effective ways to leave aging behind.
