Spotlight on Salicylic Acid

Salicylic Acid is a naturally derived beta-hydroxy acid found in willow trees, and is an extremely useful ingredient in most skin care routines.  It is used to help a wide variety of skin conditions such as acne, dandruff, psoriasis, and warts.  Because of its effectiveness and most people’s ability to tolerate it on their skin – it is generally the first choice of dermatologists as an ingredient in acne treatment.

Salicylic Acid works to help the top layers of the skin peel off gently, therefore expediting exfoliation and preventing the pores from being clogged and helping to shed extra layers of skin from psoriasis.  It is also an incredibly good anti inflammatory and anti-bacterial for the skin.  Acne is prevented and healed faster by keeping the skin fresh and clean.

Because of its ability to shed skin cells to reveal fresher skin, improve collagen levels, and to keep the pores open, Salicylic Acid is a great ingredient for anti-aging.  Fine lines become blurred and fresh skin is revealed.  It is commonly used in wart removal treatments as well, and has been used for centuries as a fever and muscle reliever.

Salicylic Acid is commonly found in creams and gels and has a few side effects such as redness, burning, peeling, and tingling on the areas applied to, but these can be prevented by using a good quality gel with a blend of salicylic acid and other soothing ingredients such as the Derma Cleanse Acne Gel.  Salicylic Acid is preferred to other acne treatments such as Benzoyl Peroxide and Sulfur because it is gentler on the skin and just as effective.   Applying a thin layer 1-2 times a day should significantly help with the look of your skin.
