Treatments for Rosacea

There are several things that can be done at home to reduce Rosacea symptoms and prevent progression of the condition. The number one rule to prevention is to avoid contact with the face unless necessary. Rubbing or scrubbing the face causes rapid blood flow and causes the blood vessels to enlarge. As this happens, the flow of blood is more rapid and causes the redness and puffiness.

Proper skin care is the most effective preventive. Lotions, cosmetic, and soaps that do not contain alcohol or are noncomedogenic are required. The majority of products that are for sensitive skin are a part of these categories. Cosmetics that have a green base will help mask the redness that is associated with Rosacea. The use of sunscreen is important to protect from everyday exposure to the sun. Make sure to use a product that is recommended for sensitive skin.

Avoiding other triggers is also essential in prevention. Spicy foods, hot drinks, or alcoholic drinks should not be consumed. Dairy plays an important role as a trigger for Rosacea. The National Rosacea Society has published a list of dairy products to stay away from when flare ups happen. Daily consumption of dairy is not recommended for prevention. It is important to say cool even during exercise. It might be necessary to exercise for shorter periods of time to allow the skin to cool down. Stay away from saunas, hot tubs, or spas.

Medications can take several weeks before they begin to show improvement. Topical antibiotics can be applied to the skin to help manage the condition. Oral antibiotics can also be prescribed for patients that have severe cases. Although the papules respond quickly to treatment of oral antibiotics, the redness and swelling can stick around. Laser treatments are available as a final option for extreme cases of Rosacea.
