Is there anything better at the end of a long day than to soak in a nice hot bath? If you are not already doing so – next time add some Epsom salts. Epsom salts have many benefits.
Epsom salts are derived from a bitter saline spring in Epsom, England – which is obviously how they got their name! These salts are not actually salts bur minerals that are composed of sulfate and magnesium and are totally different than the average table salt. Sulfates, and especially magnesium, are easily absorbed through the skin which is why soaking in these minerals is a great idea.
Some of the benefits of soaking in warm to hot water mixed with a few cups of Epsom salts include the general relaxation of the body and any muscle cramps or tired achy muscles, lowering blood pressure, improving circulation, and the overall detoxification of the body as it draws out toxins. Other uses include adding it to conditioner for oil control and shinier hair, soaking feet in the salts to alleviate athlete’s foot and help with odor problems, killing lice on body hair, and to relieve constipation.
Epsom salts can also be used directly on the skin. Grab a handful of dry salts and rub on your wet skin as a natural exfoliant to get rid of dry skin – add a bit of olive oil to the salts if your skin needs a little more moisture. Or make a paste out of Epsom salts and a gentle cleanser to use as a face mask to reduce any irritation.
Epsom salts are relatively inexpensive, safe to use, and offer great health and beauty benefits. You can even add a few drops of your favorite essential oil(s) to them before you use them as an extra special treat.
