3 Simple Home Remedies for Removing Blackheads

Bright red acne blemishes and whiteheads are frustrating, but blackheads are downright frustrating. So small, yet so visible to your ever keen eyes. If they aren’t going to blossom, why are they even there?

Perhaps, that’s just how I feel about blackheads. One of the most common questions I get asked is how to deal with this pesky skin problem.

Remedies for Removing BlackheadsFor those of you who don’t know, the term “blackhead” refers to a skin opening that has become discolored due to oxidize buildup. They typically form before significant amounts of bacteria enters the hair follicle, which is why they remain so small.

Blackheads are most commonly on or around your nose and in your chin dip. These areas tend to build up excess oil and the crevices are so small it’s harder to keep them clean.

Of course there are great blackhead products you can buy, but there are also a few simple at home DIY’s you can make. Here are 3 of my go to blackhead banishing home remedies.

1. Witch Hazel Compress

Just like the name suggests, all you’re going to do for this blackhead treatment is soak a cotton pad with Witch Hazel (easily found at any pharmacy) and place it over your affected area. Let it soak in for 3-5 minutes. Remove the compress and let your skin air dry.

Witch Hazel is a natural astringent with antioxidant properties that make it great for fighting acne. It is gentle enough that you can use it twice daily without fear of drying out or irritating your skin.

2. Lavender Steam Facial

images (5)For this simple facial, all you need is 2 tablespoons of dried lavender, 2 cups of boiled water in a bowl and a medium sized towel.

Add your lavender into your bowl of boiled water and carefully place your face over the steaming bowl. Do not put it close enough that you scorch your skin; be at least 1 foot away from it. Cover your face and the bowl with the towel so you get the full steam action. Sit tight for 10-15 minutes or until the water cools.

Steam facials are great because they gently open up your pores and allow your body to naturally sweat out bacteria and toxins that may be causing acne. The antibacterial properties in lavender help kill current bacteria to prevent future breakouts.

3. Egg White Pore Strip

I love this simple homemade pore strip. All you need is one whipped egg white, a paint brush and  a few sheets of toilet paper or facial tissue.

Brush your blackhead affected areas with your whipped egg white. Place small strips of tissue over it, then paint a second layer of egg white over top. Allow your strip to dry fully. This can take anywhere from 10-20 minutes depending on how much egg white you used.

Once dry, grasp one corner of the strip and gently pull it off. Rinse any remaining egg off your face with lukewarm water and pat dry.

You’ll be amazed how many blackheads you see, if you take a peek at your used strip. The vitamins and minerals found in egg whites are great for preventing acne, while the protein content helps tighten pores to prevent the likelihood of future blackheads.

When blackheads are getting the best of you, give one of these 3 simple DIY’s a try and show that acne who is boss!
