Every week we like to bring you a roundup of some of the latest trends in beauty, health and wellness, and other articles of interest to ZENMED blog readers. Last week, we came across some interesting information on a new beauty app, sun damage not seen by the naked eye, bad beauty habits by young women and how where you live might affect your looks.
Plum Perfect: The amazing new beauty app worthy of its buzz
Janene Mascarella shares details of a new beauty application that is creating quite a buzz among beauty product lovers. Plum Perfect allows you to snap a selfie with your smartphone and then the app analyzes your coloring–from your lip color to your eye color– and then gives you a detailed look at the best colors for your complexion. It even recommends shade combinations. This ‘game changer’ is currently available for iOS, with plans to hit Android mobile devices soon.
Startling viral video shows effects of sun on the skin
ABC News has licensed a video by Thomas Leveritt which reveals sun damage undetectable to the naked eye. Leveritt’s goal is to make the public aware of how necessary sunscreen usage is. In the video, skin is examined under an ultraviolet light. The results are nothing short of a wake up call. The areas protected by sunscreen were black on the screen, while the sun damaged areas appeared as white spots. Dermatologist Dr. Doris Day says that “if you use sunscreen everyday all year round, that you lower your risk of skin cancer and aging by 20 percent.”
Young women failing to look after their skin: Research
IANS reports on a new study in the UK on women and their beauty habits. It looks like women in their 30s have some explaining to do. According to the study, only 24% of women in their thirties moisturize their skin. More than 50% of women in this age group go to bed without removing their makeup. This can lead to premature fine lines and acne flare ups. Makeup artist Alana Phillips says that “leaving your make-up on overnight you are allowing your skin to have unnecessary exposure to the free radicals in the environment, such as from pollution, which cause the breakdown of collagen and results in fine lines on the skin.” Do you have bad skincare habits? Or have you developed a consistent skincare routine?
Frizzy hair? Blame your postcode: From tap water to exhaust fumes, where you live affects your looks
Marianne Power shares how where you live can impact your appearance. Do you live in a home with hard water? If so, the extra minerals may be making your hair look dull. If you live in a humid environment, your hair may also be affected. I can attest to the fact that humidity makes my hair frizzy and unmanageable in the summer, so I end up throwing it in a ponytail so I do not have to deal with it. Pollution from living in a large city may be aging to the skin, as the contaminants in the air can cause a breakdown of collagen. Do you experience any beauty side effects because of where you live?
