Beauty and wellness roundup: Antioxidants, nickel, Botox and beauty routines

Every week we like to bring you a roundup of some of the latest trends in beauty, health and wellness, and other articles of interest to ZENMED blog readers. Last week, we came across some interesting reading on foods we can eat to get more antioxidants, the rise in nickel allergies, Botox as a possible cancer fighter and fall beauty routines.

10 unknown sources of antioxidants you never knew

Heather McClees shares some lesser known sources of the free radical fighting superheroes we call antioxidants. Most people, when asked to name a common antioxidant, will probably say blueberries or green tea. There are many other sources of these great protectors and we can find them right at the grocery store. Among them: chia seeds, brown rice, coffee and ripe bananas. This is great news, as it means we can incorporate more antioxidant-rich foods into our diets.

Nickel allergies on rise after devices meet skin

Rachel Abrams  reports on the increasing number of cases of contact dermatitis stemming from wearable fitness devices containing nickel. Fitbit, for example, recalled more than a million of their popular wristbands and is facing legal action because of adverse skin reactions. Unlike the EU, which limits the amount of nickel allowed in consumer products, the United States has no such restriction, prompting consumer advocacy groups to seek change.

Botox for fighting cancer?

Botox may halt cancer growth, reports Karen Weintraub. Citing a new paper co-authored by Dr. Timothy Wang, chief of the Division of Digestion and Liver Diseases at Columbia University, the injections may cut of nerve cells that feed tumors. This experimental treatment is being used on stomach cancer patients in Norway and may soon be used on pancreatic cancer patients at Columbia University.

Consumers reinstating beauty routines

Men and women are jumping back on the skincare bandwagon, shares Skin Inc. magazine. While many of us are more lenient and slack off on skincare in the summer, a new survey shows that consumers are increasing their interest in new skincare products and treatments. New product such as EE creams for rapid exfoliation and skin cleansing devices are said to be popular fall purchases.
