Infrared saunas are the new hot thing

Recently I had the pleasure of receiving a full body massage which started with 15 minutes in an infrared sauna.  I had no idea what this was until they put me in the box and explained a little about it.  The infrared sauna is meant to gently relax the body and release toxins as you perspire.  If it is used regularly it is also said to increase weight loss.  I decided to look more into what it’s all about and if these claims are true.

Scientists laugh off any weight loss claims saying you may lose a slight amount of water weight with the extreme heat and perspiration but this weight will come right back after moving around for a bit or even drinking a glass of water.  Infrared saunas claim to be better than regular saunas because the infrared heat is used to directly penetrate the body’s tissues while regular saunas give off air currents which provide indirect heat to the body.  Infrared saunas are also said to be safer and healthier as traditional saunas can cultivate bacteria which can be spread from person to person, or even within yourself.  The direct heat benefits the body by providing deep tissue release which is great for sore, stiff muscles and joint soreness.  As with any sauna, the heat will increase your blood circulation and allow you to sweat out impurities on the surface of the skin – this can make your skin glow and give you a general all over healthier feeling.

Since the cold weather is upon us and it’s that time of year when we all get sniffly – it may be worth your while to spend some time in an infrared sauna.  It may be just what you need to ward off any sickness.  I felt great after stepping out of it and I caught a look at myself in the mirror and saw that I was glowing – and that was even before my massage!   You just have to be sure to drink lots of water afterwards to replace any water you’ve sweated out and are sure not to stay in too long as that can be more dangerous than beneficial.  Fifteen to Twenty minutes a few times a week is optimal.  I know I will be booking another appointment very soon.
