As one gets older, skin can start to sag, including the skin under your chin. Very few people, if anyone, enjoys the self-discovered sight of this aging revelation. Fortunately, if you are proactive in your chin and neck skin care, you can reduce the effects through exercises, food, and a strategic skincare routine.

The Turkey Neck

The sagging of under-the-chin skin is often referred to as turkey neck, jowls, and double chin. The development of this loose skin can occur for two primary reasons: aging and weight loss. If you have lost a significant amount of weight, you might notice that your double chin has reduced, however, the skin under your chin has become loose from being stretched. Also, as you get older, the elasticity in your skin naturally diminishes causing a similar effect of the sagging skin. You might also be a victim of sun damage or simply genetics. This sagging neck skin phenomenon can occur in both men and women. However, all hope is not lost to regain some of your tight chin skin to provide a more youthful appearance.

Exercise and Food

One of the best ways to prevent a flabby neck from the beginning is to maintain a healthy weight through regular exercise and diet. According to Canada’s McMaster University research, regular exercise can make skin appear younger by creating more elasticity. Many people also see results by following centralized chin and neck exercises. Such exercises only take a few minutes each day and many people see positive results. A few additional simple ways to minimize sagging skin is to drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated at all times and to eat natural foods that boost collagen such as oranges, sweet potatoes, nuts, whole grains, leafy greens, and shellfish.

Products and Procedures

UK Anti-aging expert Dr. Sarah Tonks and a study from the German Collagen Research Institute both found that using products containing hyaluronic acid can help to increase the tautness of skin, including under the neck, over time. Retinol is another ingredient in quality products than can help prevent sagging. It can also be as simple as making sure you use moisturizer daily on your neck, as well as your face, as yet another way to increase hydration into your skin. If you are prepared to take a more extreme approach, you can always pursue surgical procedures such as a neck lift.

At the end of the day, you have to do what is right for you whether that be exercising, changing your diet, using the right products, or pursuing medical procedures. Whichever step you take, you will be well on your way to eliminating that turkey neck and developing a more youthful appearance.
